The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Monday to lift the arms embargo on the Congolese government but extended a ban on arms sales and military training to all militias and rebel groups in the country.

The council’s action was seen as a show of support for President Joseph Kabila’s government following democratic elections and its efforts to restore security in much of the country.

Asked whether the resolution would help the government combat militias still operating in the volatile east, Congo’s U.N. Ambassador Atoki Ileka, said: “Yes, absolutely. That’s what we are aiming at.”

The resolution adopted by the council also extended a travel ban and asset freeze on a list of individuals, including political and military leaders of foreign armed groups. It ordered financial and travel restrictions against leaders who recruit child soldiers — and against individuals who kill, maim and abduct children and women, and subject women to sexual violence.
